Health Insurance Premiums Surge, Many Young Adults Uninsured

Options

DENISON, TX--In anticipation of President Obama's healthcare plan, which will take effect in 2013, health insurance premiums have gone up, on average 20 to 30 percent, according to a local broker.

Insurance Broker Vance Hatfield says that mandatory insurance could make it more expensive for everyone. Hatfield says, however, that the biggest contributors to health insurance inflation are obesity and the explosion of people on prescription drugs.

Many of those uninsured are under the age of 30.

"The biggest thing I've seen is when they come off of their parents plan--they either don't know where to go to get the coverage or they think I won't need it, I'm young, I'm bullet proof--you know--superman. There's no way anything is going to happen to me," Hatfield said.

Hatfield says that young adults with no preexisting conditions can get fairly comprehensive plan for less than $120 a month.
